Finding sweat relief for the first time

The implications of hyperhidrosis are wide-reaching, and the story of Marisha Ray is a model for how this can impact a person’s personal and professional lives.

Marisha Ray was only 19 when her parents drove her from her hometown in Kentucky to Los Angeles to pursue the dream of stardom. She began her journey in showbusiness collecting tips as a tap dancer on Hollywood Boulevard; now, seven years later, one would think Marisha should have been singing hallelujahs from the top of Mount Hollywood. She rose in prominence to feature in various film sets and booked recurring roles on several TV shows.

But, what appeared to be an unlikely story of success in Hollywood was actually a long, constant battle with a chronic health condition.

Marisha was born with hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes profuse sweating in the hands, under the arms and on the feet. Approximately 1 in 50 Americans suffer from this condition each year.

In Marisha’s case, her excessive sweating weighed on every decision in her life — from what T-shirt she wore on a given day to the colors in her wardrobe. Some nights, she would give up entirely — skipping a night out with her friends to sit home alone from shame of sweating.

Marisha struggled with hyperhidrosis every day. On one occasion, she recalls simply holding onto a microphone during a performance was more challenging than the singing and dancing itself!

After one particularly difficult episode, she broke down. She could not take the daily struggle any longer. With the same grit she had summoned to conquer Hollywood, she determined that she would find a solution to her suffering. While she could not believe there was nobody out there who understood her problems, surely, she thought, somebody had to have dedicated their work to solving health-related issues such as hers.

She began searching online for help and ultimately found her solution: The Center for Hyperhidrosis. In no time at all, Marisha was sitting across from one of the world’s leading experts on hyperhidrosis.

After working with the team at The Center of Hyperhidrosis, she felt comfortable and ready to undergo the procedure and shortly thereafter, her life would forever be changed – she was relieved of her chronic sweatiness and began living life with naturally dry, warm hands.

For the first time in her life, Marisha was able to grip a microphone under hot studio lights, and slowly, she began joining her community of friends in LA for long nights out on the town.

Today, Marisha Ray co-owns an entertainment business with her husband, and stars in the hit TV show, Critical Role, which is now shooting its 12th season. Without fear from her former condition, she is able to comfortably interact with her fans who come out and support her from around the world!

If Marisha’s struggles sound familiar to you, we invite you to meet our team and learn more about our latest innovation in combating hyperhidrosis. The countless stories we hear on a daily basis remind us that Marisha’s experience is not just isolated to a few people. . . come learn how we can help you!

Across the country

The struggle that affects as many as 2% of Americans

Hyperhidrosis affects approximately 1-2% of the population in the United States, and is more prevalent in other parts of the world. Despite how large of a problem it is – it is often very misunderstood.

Patients can often go years without even having a name for what they are suffering from. Even doctors and clinical professionals struggle to understand the condition.

Every day, we see patients who have spent a lifetime struggling with the simple things. No sports because the ball slides through their hands. No shaking hands when meeting someone new. No freedom with what to wear. Worried about how they smell. Even something as simple as walking barefoot can be treacherous for our patients. We have seen patients who have broken their ankles when they slipped on their own sweat.

The struggle is real.

It’s no wonder that many, like Marisha, just stay home some days.

We see patients from every walk of life and every ethnic group. Our patients are teenagers and adults, single and married. Not only do they visit us from all over the country, our patients travel from around the world seeking relief from such a painful problem.

It is not surprising that after years of getting very few answers, many patients have a hard time believing that an outpatient surgery exists that could change their lives forever – in as little as two hours.

A note from

Dr. Basseri, co-founder of The Center for Hyperhidrosis

My name is Dr. Eraj Basseri, surgeon and co-founder of The Center for Hyperhidrosis. The mission for the Center is to provide proactive care to patients and quality education to doctors and other surgeons on hyperhidrosis. We strive to educate on the diagnosis and causes of hyperhidrosis and the proven surgical techniques we have pioneered.

I was privileged to be trained in hyperhidrosis surgery by Dr. Rafael Reisfeld, who has been the leader in hyperhidrosis surgery for decades. He is the author of much of the medical literature on hyperhidrosis, and I am proud to say he is a partner at the Center.

Dr. Reisfeld was drawn to specialize in hyperhidrosis because he had a childhood friend with the condition. That sense of a personal mission runs throughout the Center.

If you have hyperhidrosis, you know that hyperhidrosis brings a primary level of suffering caused by sweating profusely. You will also know that there is a secondary level of suffering: the frustration that comes from trying to find a diagnosis and a treatment that works.

Along the way, you might have suffered multiple disappointments. You may have even doubted that a solution out there exists because of the overwhelming struggle you have endured.

If that describes you, we understand because we see people every day who feel the way you do. But it really is true: there is a solution.

Every year at the Center, we perform outpatient surgery for hundreds of hyperhidrosis patients with a success rate of 99.2%.

Whether the surgery is for your hands or your feet, the results of successful surgery are immediate.

As I say, I am with you because I understand how overwhelming this experience can be. The good news is that you’ve found it now, and we’re only a phone call away.

Now, there are only two surgeons in the world who can perform hyperhidrosis surgery on both hands and feet – I am one of them. My goal is to change this; as co-founder of the Center, travel around the world teaching other surgeons how to perform hyperhidrosis surgery.

However, despite how much time we invest in training other doctors the surgical techniques, our number one priority is the patients. That’s why I make time to speak on the phone — for free — to any hyperhidrosis sufferer who wants to take charge of their condition and understand their options.

If you are suffering from profuse sweating I encourage you to schedule a free consultation with me. If you live in Los Angeles, I encourage you to book an in-person consultation.

I will always be happy to speak with you.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for sweating more than your body needs to. Regardless of temperature or climate, people with hyperhidrosis sweat, and often to dripping levels.

Where Does Hyperhidrosis Occur?

Hyperhidrosis sufferers might sweat all over their body (generalized hyperhidrosis). More often, the sweating is localized in one or more areas (focal hyperhidrosis). Commonly, sufferers have:

  • Sweaty palms (palmar hyperhidrosis) and
  • Sweaty feet (plantar hyperhidrosis)

But focal hyperhidrosis can also occur in the armpits, the groin and the rear end.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a genetic condition — about 66% of patients have a family history.

The excessive sweating is a result of overactivity in the sympathetic chain, a collection of nerves that deliver information to the body about stress and impending danger.

These nerves are responsible for your fight-or-flight response, so it is no surprise they also control the sweat glands in your hands, feet and other areas.

The nerves responsible for hand sweating (palmar hyperhidrosis) are in the upper part of the chest (thoracic) cavity. The nerves responsible for foot sweating (plantar hyperhidrosis) are in your lower back (lumbar region).

Hyperhidrosis is not caused by:

  • An overactive thyroid
  • Anxiety
  • Diabetes

However, there are reasons for heavy sweating that are not hyperhidrosis. It is important your surgeon is qualified to rule out other causes such as:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Menopause
  • Obesity
  • Medications

How Has Hyperhidrosis Been Treated Historically?

Doctors have tried to treat excessive sweating with pills, lotions, neurotoxin injection, deodorants, electric devices, acupuncture and biofeedback. If you have experienced any of these prescribed or recommended for you, it will not surprise you to hear that these treatments have very low success rates for severe cases of excessive sweating.

The first surgical treatments for hyperhidrosis were performed more than 50 years ago. For decades, surgeons lacked the fine tools we have today for precise, technical surgeries. As a result, these early surgeries were invasive. Patients were cut wide open at the back, chest or neck.

In the 1990s, endoscopes made “keyhole” surgery possible for hyperhidrosis. An endoscope is a fiber optic camera with a tool attached. Endoscopes allow surgeons to thread their way through small incisions rather than making invasive cuts.

With endoscopes, hyperhidrosis surgery could be performed in an outpatient procedure. Patients started walking out of the facility within hours of their surgery.

Although many surgeons can perform keyhole surgeries, the techniques involved in hyperhidrosis surgery are highly specific. The techniques take years of practice under the supervision of a surgeon who has mastered them.

While the sympathetic chain (the overactive nerves causing excessive sweating) is similar in most people, the ways in which patients suffer can variety quite significantly. Only experienced surgeons will be able to identify these abnormalities and solve any issues that arise.

Unfortunately, there are few surgeons in the world who specialize in hyperhidrosis, and only two who can operate on both hands and feet. One of them is our co-founder, Dr. Basseri.

The Latest Surgical
Treatment for Hyperhidrosis

After performing thousands of hyperhidrosis surgeries, making substantial contributions to the medical literature in the field, and innovating one of the most effective solutions to hyperhidrosis, our team at The Center for Hyperhidrosis is the leading provider of surgical techniques for focal hyperhidrosis.

Our techniques have been validated by several clinical trials and medical studies that praise our solution as the most effective treatments for hyperhidrosis.

Why Do Our Hyperhidrosis Surgeries Have Such High Success Rates?

Our surgical procedure boasts a 99.2% success rate. Our effectiveness is a result of a diligent process that has been studied and refined for decades:

  • We carefully screen patients so that we are operating only on individuals for whom surgery is most likely to work. This surgery is not suitable for everyone.
  • We apply the right surgical technique at the right level of the sympathetic chain for optimal results.

You might have read about problems arising after hyperhidrosis surgery. It is important to understand the context of those experiences. Poor results are more common when surgeons:

  • Apply the right technique at the right level to the wrong patient or
  • Apply the wrong technique at the wrong level to the right patient

Because of our deep experience, The Center for Hyperhidrosis takes proactive steps to ensure the procedure will be successful.

An Overview Of Hyperhidrosis Surgery

At The Center for Hyperhidrosis, we have refined our approach over decades of world-class research and clinical trials for the best patient outcomes.

  • We make minimal incisions, which means patients can return to normal activities in almost no time at all.
  • Our endoscopic instruments are custom made for hyperhidrosis surgery.
  • In operations for palmar hyperhidrosis (sweaty hands), we approach the nerves lower down than most surgeons do — at the T3 or T4 level rather than at the T2 level. This leads to much better results for the patients because it reduces compensatory sweating in other areas.
  • We use titanium clips instead of burning or cutting the nerve. Clipping the nerve means the procedure is reversible. We can simply remove the clip in the unlikely event that this is necessary. A cut or burnt nerve cannot be restored.
  • We have refined different surgical techniques depending on where the hyperhidrosis is presenting.
  • We close the incision internally with absorbent sutures so it’s not necessary to come back to have them removed.
  • The surgeries are performed at a fully accredited AAAHC outpatient surgical facility.
  • The surgeons are supported by highly trained nurses and experienced staff who provide a safe, caring and professional environment for surgery.

  • Dry and Warm Immediately After
    Hyperhidrosis Surgery

The nature of hyperhidrosis means the results of successful surgery are immediate.

As soon as your nerve is clipped, the excessive activity in your sympathetic chain ceases immediately.

The first thing you will notice when you wake up from surgery is that you are dry and warm.

  • Incredible Recovery Times From
    Hyperhidrosis Surgery

Our hyperhidrosis surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis. Patients typically undergo general anesthesia for about 1-2 hours, the length of the average surgical procedure.

Two hours after surgery, most patients are on their feet, walking out of the medical center, sweat free.

In about a week, patients are back to work and are able to perform physical activity.

Separate Hyperhidrosis Surgeries For Hands and Feet

The nerves that control sweating in the hands are located in the chest (thoracic region). Foot sweating is controlled by nerves in the lower back (lumbar region).

Each area of hyperhidrosis requires its own surgical technique. And while there are around twenty-five surgeons in the world specializing in focal hyperhidrosis surgery for the hands, there are only two who can operate on both hands and feet.

The extreme scarcity of surgeons who can operate to solve hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet is critical because the reality for 95% of patients is that they will need both operations at least six months apart. Therefore, the specialized expertise that Dr. Basseri and Dr. Reisfeld have in these procedures will help you if both operations are needed.

Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy for Palmar Hyperhidrosis

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) is the only proven surgical solution to excessive hand sweating (palmar hyperhidrosis).

The operation on the chest is quick (about an hour) and is performed under general anesthesia that requires only two small incisions (5mm and 10mm) through which the surgeon can insert the endoscope.

ETS is a reversible procedure because we clamp the nerves rather than burning or cutting them.

  • Endoscopic Lumbar Sympathectomy For Plantar Hyperhidrosis

Endoscopic lumbar sympathectomy (ELS) is the surgery most often recommended for patients who suffer from severe excessive foot sweating (plantar hyperhidrosis) as their primary or only area of excessive sweating.

We might also perform ELS in cases where patients did not see results from ETS.

The surgery on the lower back is performed under general anesthesia and lasts between one and two hours. It involves just three small cuts. The longest is only about 1.5 cm and the others are about half as long. The surgeon threads the endoscope through the incisions to perform the surgery.

Like any surgical procedure that attempts to correct physiological genetic problems with mechanical solutions, recurrence of the original problem is always a possibility. However, the odds of recurrence are low. And the possibility is least likely when your surgeon has extensive experience and knowledge, especially as anatomical variations are possible.
